Public Safety & Community Policing are Changing:

As our country, states, counties, and cities reconsider and redefine what community safety means the portion of the Melrose Community focused on Public Safety in collaboration with OPD needs to change and transform to meet new requirements so community members feel safe, neighborhoods are not over-policed, and community-led safety grows in Melrose.

Members are leaning toward a separation of community-based development initiatives grown and delivered via a neighborhood association format and a separate group and set of initiatives and topics constrained to Public Safety and direct relationships with OPD via the NCPC format and direct interaction with city officials.

New Leaders Need to Work with OPD

New NCPC leadership will need to define how the specific relationship Melrose community members want to have with OPD will work and how the new relationship and services will be implemented over time as public safety is re-imagined here in Oakland and nationwide.

Tonight's meeting will be focused on discussing ideas about how folks can work directly with OPD representatives, and the City Administrator's office that own the work of the Neighborhood Services Coordinators, to co-create safety for Melrose residents and business owners.
