Courtland Creek Campaign

During Shelter in Place, our local spaces have become more important than ever. Have you ever wondered why you drive to North Oakland to Alameda to go to a park? Why don’t we have our safe space to recreate? Where are our kids going if not to our local parks? We would like to partner with OPD and the City to take back Cortland Creek, a recreational space that is overrun with homeless encampments and gun violence.

If you are interested in joining the effort to kick start our Courtland Creek Campaign, we want to hear from you on the 28th. If you have other areas of concern in the 27x that need special attention, we want to hear about those too!

Please attend this very important Melrose Public Safety meeting tonight to discuss the future of the NCPC portion of our group previously known as the Melrose High Hopes Police Beat 27x Neighborhood Crime Prevention Council.

All rolls are open for nomination and elections on Sept. 23, 2020.

New leaders are required for the NCPC 27x to continue as both key leadership roles have been vacated:

  • Chair, Stephanie Hayden resigned July 7 but will train new leaders and act as emergency contact for the NCPC during the 60 day period leading up to Sept. 23 elections

  • Vice Chair, Braunz Courtney resigned mid-June

  • Treasurer, Vacant

  • Secretary, Marissa Bowman helping

  • Community Outreach, Marissa Bowman

Public Safety & Community Policing are Changing:

As our country, states, counties, and cities reconsider and redefine what community safety means the portion of the Melrose Community focused on Public Safety in collaboration with OPD needs to change and transform to meet new requirements so community members feel safe, neighborhoods are not over-policed, and community-led safety grows in Melrose.

Members are leaning toward a separation of community-based development initiatives grown and delivered via a neighborhood association format and a separate group and set of initiatives and topics constrained to Public Safety and direct relationships with OPD via the NCPC format and direct interaction with city officials.

New Leaders Need to Work with OPD

New NCPC leadership will need to define how the specific relationship Melrose community members want to have with OPD will work and how the new relationship and services will be implemented over time as public safety is re-imagined here in Oakland and nationwide.

Tonight's meeting will be focused on discussing ideas about how folks can work directly with OPD representatives, and the City Administrator's office that own the work of the Neighborhood Services Coordinators, to co-create safety for Melrose residents and business owners.

AGENDA

7:00-7:15 Hellos, Code of Conduct, and Goals for the Meeting

7:15-7:50 Public Safety Discussions for Melrose as Law Enforcement Roles are Redefined

  • This is a conversation diretly between OPD & Melrose Members

    • What does safety look like for individuals and businesses during these times of transition?

    • What do we want OPD to focus on in Melrose, and what do we want to handle with other services, or within the community members themselves?

    • Can we think of a pilot to try a new approach, potentially utilized the MACRO program, or other services this year?

    • How can community members help define safety relationships and turn that into reality on a day-to-day basis?

7:50-8:00pm Melrose NCPC Role Nominations and Volunteers to take Chair activities

  • Vice Chair

  • Treasurer

  • Secretary

Michael Ford, Smart Parking & Mobility Manager at the City of Oakland Department of Transportation, our featured speaker for tonight has offered to step out of this session to allow us all to focus on the issue of traffic-related deaths in Melrose. He's happy to come back and join us as a speaker early in 2020. Thanks Michael!

We now have Wladimir Wlassowski, Assistant Director DOT, Joe Wang, Supervising Transportation Engineer for the City of Oakland, and Warren Logan, the Policy Director of Mobility and Interagency Relations for the Oakland Mayor's Office joining us to directly address our demands outlined in the Melrose Street Scape Letter Writing Campaign from Oct. 4.

We asked multiple city leaders to address our questions and concerns about the rise in traffic deaths on Foothill Blvd over the last 6 months. If you have questions tonight is the night to join Melrose Council to get some answers and help us take action!

Agenda
