Melrose Has New Chair & Vice Chair

In May 2019, after 25+ years leading Melrose High Hopes NCPC 27x community group, Preston and Sheila Turner announced they had decided to step down from leadership to focus on business projects then asked members at the monthly NCPC to nominate and elect new leaders to take their place.

It came as a shock to most everyone even though Preston told people they’d have to elect someone else soon, people didn’t imagine it would actually happen as he’s so committed and connected to everything.

But that night he did and those in attendance considered who could, and would, take his place.

Nayeli Maxson was nominated and elected as Chair of NCPC 27x, and Stephanie Hayden was nominated and elected as the Vice Chair.

Nayeli has been in Melrose for 4+ years and is an active community member working as the CEO of a non-profit that works to connect entrepreneurs with funding and resources to grow their businesses and Stephanie discovered the Melrose neighborhood, via AirBnB, in 2018 as part of a non-profit initiative to live in many different communities throughout Oakland and try to learn what people feel they are or are not getting from government in order to build technology and data solutions to meet their needs. Melrose residents invited her to learn more about the community so she returned in 2019 to see what resources could be brought to the community. Since being elected to the Neighborhood Council she’s found a place to live in Melrose and won’t be leaving any time soon.
