Subject: FW: Bond St - Follow up meeting

Good afternoon,

Thank you all for your input and time. In attendance, we had representatives from the school, Bond St. residents, Union Point Park surrounding business owners, Harbor Master as well as Council Member - Noel Gallo and representatives from his office.

HERE IS A SUMMARY:

A collaboration between the residents, business owners and school is recognized as great way unify and voice out the concerns in clearing both encampments. It was discussed to address the entire community’s concerns involving the health and safety concerns of the children attending the school’s first. Due to the following reasons:

  • When speaking to the public and politics, student safety is a priority.

  • AMethod Public Schools are nationally recognized for their student academic performance. They have 2 locations nearby homeless encampments. The students attending Oakland Charter Academy have the Bond St. Encampment behind their campus and Downtown Oakland Academy has Union Point Park a couple of blocks away. Union Point Park cannot be used for recreational student activities and because of the lack of access and safety for the students. Children are intimidated and are having to walk to school with great fear of being harassed or see violent behavior and drug use on their way to school.

  • Classes are starting next Monday, August 12th and we need our children to be in a safe and drug free environment now.

  • Homeless Task Force has been working on homeless issues with temporarily fixes only, but have not addressed the serious permanent consequences to the safety and health of our future leaders- the students.

  • Press conference with school, residents and business owners date TBD

FUTURE STEPS:

  • Steven - North Kennedy Tract Neighborhood members will send to Mr. Gallo’s office the signed petition and letters of support from the business owners in the Union Point Park surrounding area requesting to address the issue and restore the park to its original condition, re-landscape, re-install turf and maintain the park.

  • Chris - Bond St. Residents will appoint a spokesperson to be the initial point of contact for future collaboration with school and Steven from North Kennedy Tract Neighborhood

  • Mr. Moncada – will send out to Mr. Gallo’s office the signed petition and letters of support from the school, their students and parents from both of their schools as well as surrounding schools in area with similar issues/concerns. A letter from Jorge stating the school needs the Union Point Park cleared for recreational school use.
