Oct 4: Melrose Call to Action for a Letter Writing Campaign for Safety on Foothill Blvd

Attention Those with Power to Act,

My name is Stephanie Hayden and I’m a constituent, business owner, registered voter, and Chair of the Melrose Community Council living in the Melrose neighborhood of Oakland, CA Zip Code 94601.

As you are aware, extensive data prove Zip Code determines life expectancy in Oakland.

Central East Oakland has long-suffered social and economic inequities, lack of financial and infrastructure investment, and lack of municipal protections demonstrating respect for life outcomes in our neighborhood.

I’m writing today, specifically, to express my heartfelt grief for our four Melrose and Fruitvale neighbors who’ve died over the last 6 months killed by hit-and-run drivers on Foothill Blvd. This did not have to happen. I ask the City of Oakland to bring justice and safety for the victims and families impacted by these crimes. I also want the families to know we’re organizing and unified in protecting each other to solve the dangerous situations that created their tragedies.

Aug 28: Why don't the police come when we call 911?

Having recently moved into the Melrose Community, after visiting for the last 6+ months, I’ve witnessed more events than usual regarding gunfire and calling 911 for help.

Recently a gun battle type event happened and I called 911 twice as the shots surrounded my house on 3 of 4 sides. I was very scared and called family members just in case. I was very surprised no police ever came by or contacted me or any of my neighbors from what I can tell.

I posted the event on Nextdoor and continued the conversation the next day with quite a few neighbors who have stories of their own about 911 calls going unanswered for serious events.

Rather than accepting a general impression that OPD doesn’t come to Melrose for 911 calls, I did some research in my new role as Chair of Melrose Community Council and found

Aug 27: What to do about Sideshows? @East Bay Spanish Speaking Citizens' Foundation at 1470 Fruitvale Ave from 7:00-9:00

Oakland neighborhoods have been experiencing more frequent Sideshows and we all have different perspectives on what could or should be done to reduce risk that comes when many cars and people intersect.

A group of East Oakland neighbors started talking on the Nextdoor app and many people in Community Councils have considered starting or already have started Action Committees to co-create solutions that include and work for everyone.

We're encouraging you to come by, pick up a map, and then take a walk to visit these other community gatherings marked by dots on your map!

Theme-based Community Meetings for 2019

We thought it may be a good idea to have one event per month in 2019 in order to get people outside and connecting regularly to share food, drinks, news, ideas and time.

The key changes here are that we want to re-engage residents who used to come out and share open spaces and build new reasons to get out of the house or work and connect in many locations in Melrose.
